Holiday season floods. This year you need to watch out!

4 minute read

This holiday season will be marred for thousands of people worldwide with a severe risk of flooding, according to the already ongoing natural disasters and experts` forecasts, where the weather is likely to go crazy this winter and force many of us to change our plans for the upcoming Holidays celebrations and vacation period.

For Australians, it also means that the whole summer and vacation period may turn out extremely risky to travel or stay anywhere in coastal areas or next to big water bodies.

Emergency services are already warning Australian residents and strongly recommend they have a backup plan for the upcoming vacation period as well as start preparing their houses for severe floods.

NSW State Emergency Service Commissioner Carlene York said: "With many roads flooded and properties isolated, it is important for people to take extra care while driving in flood-affected areas."

Australian Bureau of Meteorology released its long-range forecast for summer, stating it was likely to be wetter along coastal NSW, most of Victoria, South Australia, large parts of Queensland, as well as northern and eastern Tasmania.

But our holiday season floods such an outstanding phenomenon indeed, or do we actually face them more often than we think without giving too much thought to the damage we suffer regularly?

Let's go over the current floods and their causes and compare them with every "normal" year and what it costs for a regular homeowner.

"Christmas Floods" - when and how do they happen?

Although the last official "Christmas Flood" was recorded back in 1964 in the United States Pacific Northwest and some of Northern California, the Holiday season brings floods of different levels almost every year.

Weather is constantly changing because of global warming as well as the human impact on the environment and the natural water cycle. However, the Holiday season period turns out to be one of the most representative of the phenomenon of "Christmas floods."

There are several factors that cause floods all year round. Those are excessive precipitation, abnormal temperature change as well as soul wear-off, and poor maintenance of the local drainage system. Unfortunately, Holiday Season seems to be the quintessence of all those factors leading to the perfect storm of "Christmas flooding."

Wishing each other the "magical white Christmas," most of us don't even think that we are actually talking about the first ingredient for flooding - excessive snowfall. What makes it a real flood hazard, you may ask? The fact that this fresh and undenced snowcap will start melting very easily as soon as the temperatures rise even slightly.

In fact, you probably won't even notice how the weather changes a little bit and find yourself astonished when you realize that your basement has been flooded without your knowledge.

Another reason "Christmas floods" happen is the Holiday Season traditions themselves. Families gather together behind festive tables, spend several days in the same house, and, of course, consume much more energy during this time. It will probably lead to the soil around your property warming up, encouraging unnoticed seasonal flooding.

The worst part is probably the fact that when you notice the signs of flooding, water damage may already go wider and deeper than you imagine.

Last but not least is the notorious "human factor." During the Holiday season, you will probably be too busy planning dinner, doing groceries and presents shopping, decorating the house, etc. Hardly anyone thinks about cleaning the gutters or checking the drainage system when the christmas lights still remain untangled and you need to meet your auntie in the airport.

At the same time, the water probably won't manage to get absorbed into the still-frozen soil, and the blocked drainage won't serve as an escape plan B for it as well. Therefore, it will once again go directly into your basement or garage, or tool shed, causing massive damage to the building itself and the belongings you store there.

There is no way to prevent floods today, but at least you can manage their effect on your life and well-being. Preparing for the Holiday season, don't forget to install a flood control system like flood barriers or flood gates along the perimeter. Giving you peace of mind and time to deal with the most urgent matters, these modern flood control devices will make sure that you, your family, and your property remain safe in the face of "Christmas flooding."
